Wave Height Sensors
Nick Belson Design Ltd. has designed a number of wave height sensors in conjunction with IMAA Ltd., a firm of Maritime Transportation Consultants.
These sensors have wide ranging applications from geographical studies of coastal monitoring, oceanic studies and wave power, to the applied sciences of ship design for wash monitoring for design and policing duties, vessel design envelope containing and human environment proving.
Our Yacht Based Wave Height Sensor was used on all of the yachts of the 2001-2002 Volvo Ocean Race, to provide hourly updates of the significant wave height,
maximum wave height and maximum wave height period for each yacht for the statistic page of the Volvo Race Headquarters' web site.
In this application the design has proved so successful that the Volvo Ocean Race has placed an order for more sensors to be fitted to the yachts of the
2005-2006 race. For this the design has been enhanced by including the max. port, max. starboard and average angles of heel, the maximum slam and the subjective motion value for the encountered seas.
This sensor has also been used by the city of Lisbon in Portugal in capturing the local climatic conditions in support of its bid to host the America's
Cup.
