Wave Monitoring Buoys
Our range of Wave Monitoring Buoys was initially developed in conjunction with the UK's Defence Research Agency (which has now been renamed to QinetiQ).
They were designed to allow the sea testing of scale boat models, where wave sizes were needed to be recorded to be scaled against the model.
Although QinetiQ have a number of wave test tanks they are not always available due to other commitments and also due to their running costs it is sometimes cheaper and quicker to run the models in real waves in this way.
Another application is for the monitoring of a vessels wash for both design proving and for policing by harbour authorities.
Indeed a number have been purchased for use in the UK for design proving by FBM Ltd and for policing duties by Poole Harbour Authority and the Port of London Authority.
The buoys are small (50 cm round by 30 cm deep) and light (10 Kg) and easily deployed and recovered by one man.
The range of buoys included a permanently tethered Umbilical Buoy, a free-floating Radio Modem Buoy and a free-floating GSM/GPRS Buoy.
Each Buoy comes with a PC Windows software package for collecting, viewing and storing data from the buoy, and the relevant PC end modems or interfaces to
access the Buoys' data.
